GO WIDE!

Audible is making their new royalty model mandatory by the end of the year, and in our opinion, it stinks. If you have an audiobook you have been wanting to bring to a wide audience, please get in touch. We'll help you get it out from under Amazon's exploitative deal and out to wide audiences.

AUTHORS/PUBLISHERS:

Most clients who sign with Haruspex do not pay anything upfront. Really. The audiobook is produced in-house, and that cost is treated as a transparently itemized advance.

Clients receive 25% royalties until the advance is recouped, and 50% after that. Compare that to other production companies who pay nothing until the advance is earned out, and as little as 10% afterwards.

We all deserve better than Amazon-exclusive. Haruspex uses direct sales to maximize revenue, and wide distribution to get your audiobook in front of the broadest possible audience. Audible, Spotify, Libro.fm, dozens more - even your local library!

Want to sell audiobooks at conventions? We've got you covered.

Want us to produce an audiobook but own and sell it yourself? No problem, we deliver quality work at a variety of indie-friendly buyout budgets.

Already have an audiobook and want us to distribute it to wider audiences for higher revenue? We can do that too.

QUERIES:

Haruspex will be open to queries from August 10-21 for works to be adapted over the rest of this year and into Spring 2027. BIPOC and Queer authors and presses are especially encouraged, and authentic casting will be paramount.

I will be looking for:

Single-author works of 100,000 words or less, with a sweet spot 30,000-50,000.

Narrators are rightfully expensive, so longer works for which I am not a suitable narrator might be harder sells. A bit of production cost sharing would help! I am not seeking multi-author anthologies.

I'm always interested in horror, New Weird, queer romance, and erotica, but am eager to branch out into poetry, political non-fiction and criticism, and experimental genre-bending work.

Haruspex's vibe is eclectic, but here are some things I like: Queer, weird, sad, confrontational, abrasive, iconoclastic and groundbreaking narrative that lends itself well to audio. Surprising prose, striking dialogue, messy and ugly stories that lurk outside the norms of respectability and "the market." Dive bar baroque, rotting gothic, unhappy endings, unfiled teeth and unlikable characters. Vampires kissing.

NOTE: Challenging, taboo, and provocative material is great, bigotry is not. Haruspex is run by a queer disabled leftist, submit accordingly.

I work equitably with small presses and self-published authors, from debuts to established artists. A proven sales history doesn't hurt, but it is far from the only consideration.

Want to collaborate but don't want Rain to narrate? No problem, please reach out anyway. There are many incredible stories I am not the right person to perform.

WHERE: During the submission window, please use the contact form on this site.

WHAT: I want to respect your time, so please just send a Goodreads link to the work(s) you're hoping to have adapted and a brief cover letter saying why you think it's a good fit. If it’s not on Goodreads yet, please tell me about it and where I can find out more about you.
If you'd like me to narrate it, thanks, and please say so!

If there is anything I should know that's not obvious at a glance, please include this too. (You've just sold movie rights to it, you've got a narrator in mind, you are a cool press who wants to sign a multi-book deal etc)

WHEN: August 10-21 wherever you are. For a further week, queries will be open only for BIPOC-focused stories.

All queries will receive a response by the end of September.

Most responses will be a form pass or a hold request, asking you not to sell audio rights to someone else for two months while we negotiate. This is a courtesy, not a mandate.

A quick acceptance is possible, but these will be rare.

NARRATORS:

Thank you to everyone who has reached out! I'm not adding to an official roster right now, so please follow Haruspex on Instagram for the latest casting calls.

PROOFERS/ENGINEERS:

I am not currently seeking proofers or engineers/mixers. I’ll update here if that changes.

OTHER QUESTIONS?

Just reach out! Please remember this is a one-person operation for now, so thank you for your patience with response times.
